About Dongjiangyuan National Nature Reserve

Established in 1990, Dongjiangyuan National Nature Reserve is located in northern Guangdong Province, China, encompassing a mountainous landscape that serves as the source region of the Dongjiang River, a major tributary of the Pearl River. It covers an area of approximately 33,500 hectares and is characterized by subtropical evergreen broadleaf forests that provide critical habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna, including several endangered and endemic species. The reserve plays a crucial role in water conservation and ecosystem stability for the Pearl River Delta, one of China’s most important economic regions. The terrain is rugged, with peaks, valleys, and clear mountain streams that create stunning natural scenery and excellent opportunities for nature observation. Visitors to the reserve can explore well-maintained trails that wind through forests and along rivers, offering glimpses of rare bird species and native wildlife. The protected area is also important for scientific research and environmental education, helping promote awareness of biodiversity conservation. Noteworthy is its less developed tourist infrastructure compared to larger parks, which provides a more tranquil, immersive wilderness experience. Key recreational activities include hiking, bird watching, and photography, as well as educational tours focused on river conservation and forest ecology. The reserve's combination of ecological significance and scenic beauty makes it a treasured site within Guangdong Province and an important natural asset for China’s efforts in environmental stewardship.
